Eligibility Criteria for CDS 2017


Union Public Service Commission conducts Combined Defence Services examination every year to recruit for the various vacancies under

  • Indian Military academy
  • Indian Naval academy
  • Air Force academy
  • Officers training academy

CDS Nationality Eligibility

If you are applying for any of the exam mentioned above then you must have either of the following:

  1. Indian Citizenship
  2. Subject of Nepal or Bhutan
  3. A Tibetan refugee who migrated to India before the July 1, 1962 with the intention to settle down in India only.
  4. An Indian who migrated to Pakistan, Burma, Sri lanka, and east African countries (Kenya, Uganda, The United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, Vietnam) with the intention of settle down in India permanently.

Aspirant belonging to the categories 2, 3 and 4 must have eligibility certificate issued in the favour by the government f India. However, Gorkha subjects of Nepal would not need to provide eligibility certificate.

Air Force Academy 20 to 24, age up to 26 has relaxation, if holding valid and current commercial pilot license issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Age below 25 must be unmarried
Officers Training Academy (SSC for Men) 2nd Jan, 1991 to 1st Jan, 1997 Married or Unmarried
Officers Training Academy (SSC for women, non technical course) 2nd Jan, 1991 to 1st Jan, 1997 Unmarried women, issueless divorcee, or in possession of divorce, issueless widows who are not remarried.

CDS Education Qualification

The eligibility criterion also depends on the type of academy you want to join. If you want to join Officers training program, graduation in any subject from the recognised academy is required. For the Naval academy you must possess bachelors of engineering degree. Only candidates who had physics and mathematics in 10+2 and holds bachelor’s of engineering degree from the recognised university can apply for the Air force academy.

If you pass the exam and interview which is held by the Service Selection Board (SSB), then you are admitted to the respective academies.
